Photo of the three young women (center in photo) who won scholarships from UMSL yesterday afternoon through their participation in the Conscious Choice program at Roosevelt High School. Each won a scholarship for $1,500 from the university. They read their essays yesterday at a program at St. Louis University, which was held in conjunction with SLU's Trio program.
Ms. Laura Craig, RHS Library Media Specialist and Coordinator of the Roosevelt afterschool program, is in a white jacket on the right side of the frame, taking a photo.
The Conscious Choice program is a program for young women students at the high school to encourage postponing motherhood until after high school. Two of our regular Roosevelt Community Council members are mentors in the program, Rev. Paula Cooper of Curby Memorial Presbyterian Church in BPW and Norah Ryan.
Students from Vashon High School and Sumner High School also attending the program. Each school has a program similar to Conscious Choice, and Sumner also has a program for young men. Students from the Roosevelt Marine Corps Jr. ROTC also attended, along with Gunnery Sgt. Cleveland Scott and Master Sgt. Larry Toolie from RHS.
