The Rough Rider Reading Nook

The Rough Rider Reading Nook as of 3-5-2024. Since then, the rug has been replaced and several new/used chairs purchased from Warehouse of Fixtures.

We have posted on this website about the Rough Rider Reading Nook (outside the Roosevelt cafeteria) several times since it was established. We hope to establish a second reading nook in the building this year. Here's more info. about the first reading nook.

The Rough Rider Reading Nook at Roosevelt High School was established in the 2020-2021 school year, as an initiative of Ms. Enna Dancy, Roosevelt Principal. Ms. Dancy wanted books to be freely available to Roosevelt students.

Community members from the Roosevelt Community Council gathered donations of books for the reading nook, and purchased new and used books and furnishings using grant funds from the City of St. Louis.

Books were purchased from the Eye See Me bookstore in University City, Thriftbooks.com, and Amazon.com, along with the donations of books from the community. A "Little Free Library" charter was purchased for the reading nook.

The Roosevelt Community Council periodically purchases new (and some lightly used) books for the RR Reading Nook. On March 5, 2024, RCC members straightened up the reading nook and placed about 50 new books on the shelves. The recently purchased books came from Read a Book STL, a new bookstore on Meramec Ave. in the Dutchtown neighborhood, and from Thriftbooks.com and Amazon.com.

The RCC hopes to purchase a "Book Bundle" for the reading nook from the Eye See Me bookstore in the near future. The RR Reading Nook is located on the ground floor at Roosevelt, just outside the newly repainted & decorated cafeteria at the school.

Reminder that our once-a-year fundraiser for the Roosevelt Football Breakfasts is this Saturday, 1-5 pm at Riley's Irish Pub at the SE corner of Arsenal & Arkansas. It turns out that we have a number of very nice raffle items as well as brats, hotdogs, potato salad, fruit, and drinks for purchase. If you plan to come and help, we will be setting up starting at noon, and will be wrapping up, pulling raffle item winning tickets, and cleaning up starting at about 5 or so. Let us know if you can help if you haven't already let us know. The cell # for questions is 314-241-9994.

First Football Breakfast of 2015

"Football Breakfasts" means providing breakfast for the Roosevelt High School football team before its Saturday home JV and Varsity games. About 85% of the students at Roosevelt are eligible for the school's free or reduced price meal program during the school week, but there are no such meals on Saturdays. The RCC began supporting the breakfasts about 8 years ago , when Mr. Terry Houston, then principal, asked us to provide volunteers for the breakfasts. The breakfasts were his idea: they are a way to both support the team and connect the community to the school. The volunteers help set up, help serve, and clean up after the breakfasts. Currently, the RCC raises the funds for the breakfasts, hires the caterer to provide the food, and recruits the volunteers. We held a fundraiser in May at Riley's Irish Pub in Tower Grove East to raise funds for the breakfasts. The balance of the funds comes from donations. The caterer is Euylan Welch of WelchOne Catering. We al...

Update on 2025 Roosevelt High School Football Breakfasts from the Roosevelt Community Council

Roosevelt High School’s 2025 11-Man Football season was cancelled mid-way through the season after the team’s Homecoming game on September 20, 2025. That game was rained out at half time, due to a thunder storm. As reported by the school’s Athletic Director, the team had suffered some prior injuries and also the loss of some upper class team members, and the school felt that it was unsafe to continue the season with the remaining team members, many of whom were younger and smaller players.  The Roosevelt Community Council raised funds in 2025 to provide breakfast to the team before its Saturday games. Usually, this involves feeding 40 to 50 team members and a few coaches for each breakfast. Sometimes, members of the cheerleading team are also present and invited to have breakfast as well.  This is an activity we have supported for a number of years, and it has also been supported by several nearby neighborhood associations and a number of businesses, as well as the public, at ...
