First Football Breakfast of 2015

"Football Breakfasts" means providing breakfast for the Roosevelt High School football team before its Saturday home JV and Varsity games. About 85% of the students at Roosevelt are eligible for the school's free or reduced price meal program during the school week, but there are no such meals on Saturdays.

The RCC began supporting the breakfasts about 8 years ago, when Mr. Terry Houston, then principal, asked us to provide volunteers for the breakfasts. The breakfasts were his idea: they are a way to both support the team and connect the community to the school. The volunteers help set up, help serve, and clean up after the breakfasts.

Currently, the RCC raises the funds for the breakfasts, hires the caterer to provide the food, and recruits the volunteers. We held a fundraiser in May at Riley's Irish Pub in Tower Grove East to raise funds for the breakfasts. The balance of the funds comes from donations. The caterer is Euylan Welch of WelchOne Catering. We also coordinate the volunteers. Volunteers come from the RCC, the School (the Marine Corps Jr. ROTC, primarily), churches and other groups. Volunteers from outside of the school are screened through the district's volunteer background screening process.

You might ask why we need a caterer? At the first breakfast on September 12, 2015, about 60 individuals were fed breakfast. This included the Varsity and JV team members and cheerleaders, and several younger brothers who were with their older siblings. Providing a breakfast for this number of people is well beyond the capability of our volunteers (and probably any volunteers). Our caterer, Euylan Welch, provides all of the food, dishes, and serving equipment, all of which is carried into the building on the mornings of the breakfasts. Due to contractual restraints, we are not allowed to use the school's kitchen equipment for the breakfasts.

Donations to support the football breakfasts can be sent to:  Attn.:  Jane Donahue, Exec. Director, St. Louis Public Schools Foundation, 801 North 11th Street, 3rd Floor, St. Louis, MO  63101. Put "RHS Football Breakfasts Fund 935" in the memo area on the check. If you can, let us know about your donation via the Contact Us page on this website.

Here are some photos from Saturday. Thank you to Roosevelt alumnus Jim Bennett for providing the photos.
